NEWARK, NJ September 10, 2007 Right-handed starter Mark Woodyard (2-0) allowed just one run on six hits and three walks in eight innings of work to lead the Newark Bears to a 4-2 victory over the Lancaster Barnstormers on Monday night at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
Woodyard struck out five and induced three groundball double plays en route to his second straight win since coming to the Bears. He handed the ball to lefty Shaun Babula, who pitched the ninth for his first save since joining the team three days ago.
The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI groundout by first baseman Pat Peavey. An inning later, right fielder Jose Herrera doubled to drive in left fielder Ruben Mateo for a 2-0 advantage.
After Lancaster scored on a groundout in the bottom of the fourth, the Bears added two in the fifth to go up 4-1. With two outs, Herrera lined a run scoring single and third baseman Corey Smith followed with an RBI double. Herrera finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Smith went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
Barnstormers starter Josh Steven (10-9) went eight innings, surrendering four runs, three earned, on ten hits and two walks, striking out four.
The Bears will head to Long Island on Tuesday night to begin a three game series against the Ducks. Southpaw Mark Phillips (1-3) will take the mound for the Bears.
