NEWARK, NJ – September 5, 2007 – In his Newark Bears debut, right-handed starter Mark Woodyard (1-0) allowed one unearned run on two hits and three walks to lead the Bears to a 3-1 win over the York Revolution at Sovereign Bank Stadium on Wednesday night.  The win improves the Bears to 63-52 overall, tying the fourth highest win total in franchise history.

Woodyard struck out four in seven innings of work before handing the ball to reliever Edwin Almonte, who pitched two perfect innings for his ninth save.  Woodyard and Almonte combined to retire 22 of the last 24 York batters in order and did not allow a hit past the second inning.  In their last five games, Bears’ starters have pitched a combined 34 innings and surrendered just three earned runs, while striking out 29 opposing batters.

The Bears got on the board in the second inning on an RBI single by right fielder Jose Herrera.  York tied the score at one in the bottom half of the inning on a throwing error.

In the bottom of the third, designated hitter Javier Colina picked up his league leading 94th RBI with a sacrifice-fly to right field.  Catcher John Pachot gave the Bears a two run advantage in the sixth with a sacrifice-fly to left.

Offensively for the Bears, third baseman Corey Smith went 1-for-2 with two walks.  In the second inning, he doubled to left field to extend his franchise record for doubles in a season to 34.

The Bears will go for the sweep on Wednesday morning with first pitch scheduled for 11:05 AM.  Right-hander Jose Garcia (4-0) will take the mound for the Bears.
