WILD THINGS ELIMINATE GRIZZLIES
The Gateway Grizzlies were the first Frontier League team to clinch a playoff spot this season, Friday they became the first team eliminated from the post-season with a 12-9 loss to the Washington Wild Things. Washington sweeps the series 3-0. Washington will advance to the Frontier League Championship Series.
The Grizzlies, who took 2-0 lead Friday night with a pair of runs in the third inning. Jeff Vincent tripled to score Charlie Lisk, then scored on an RBI single by Ryan Sullivan.
Washington took a 5-2 lead with a five run third inning against Grizzlies starter Toro Trevino. Trevino gave up the runs on five hits. He went seven innings allowing only those runs on eight hits.
The Grizzlies scored a pair of runs in the fifth inning to cut the lead to 5-4. Charlie Lisk hit a one-out solo home run, before Mike Breyman added a two-our RBI hit. Vincent added his second RBI on his third hit of the night in the sixth to make it a 5-5 game.
The Grizzlies got three runs in the seventh to lead 8-5. Stephen Holdren tripled to drive in a pair. Greg Andrews also tripled to drive in Holdren.
Vincent finished 3-6 with two RBIs. Vincent was 5-13 in the series with two home runs and six RBIs. Holdren was 2-5 Friday with two RBIs. Holdren was 6-11 in the series with four RBIs in the three games. Andrews was 3-4 with the triple and RBI. Andrews was 4-8 for the series. Lisk was 2-5 Friday night, with the home run.
Washington took over for good with four runs in the seventh, capped off by a three-run homer by back up catcher Pat O'Brien. They added three more in the eighth to go up 12-8. James Hertel suffered the loss for the Grizzlies. Hertel gave up all four seventh inning runs on four hits.
Chris Gibson, hitting for the first time in the series, singled to drive in a run in the ninth for the Grizzlies. They had runners on second and third when the game ended.
