NEWARK, NJ – September 18, 2007 – Third baseman Corey Smith smashed a solo home run to straight away centerfield in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Newark Bears a 5-4 victory over the Long Island Ducks in Game One of the Divisional Series at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium on Tuesday night. The Bears will head to Long Island with a 1-0 series lead and two chances to clinch a trip to the Atlantic League Championship Series.
The Ducks rallied for two runs in the top half of the eighth to tie the game at four. After loading the bases on a single, a walk, and a fielding error, second baseman Ray Navarette lined a two RBI single to right field to erase the deficit.
The Bears scored three runs in the sixth to take a 4-2 lead. With one out, first baseman Victor Rodriguez drilled a home run to left field. Smith followed with a walk and right fielder Jose Herrera was hit by a pitch. Reliever Ben Grezlovski came on to face catcher John Pachot who delivered a two run double off the left field wall.
Second baseman Edgardo Alfonzo put the Ducks on top in the second inning with a solo home run over the left field wall. The Bears tied the game at one in the third on a fielding error with the bases loaded. In the fourth, Ducks’ catcher Jamie Pogue hit a sacrifice-fly to left field for a 2-1 advantage.
Bears’ reliever Jeremy Hill picked up the win with one and one-third innings of relief. Hill allowed one unearned run on a hit and a walk. Starter Harold Eckert received a no decision. He went six innings, surrendering two runs on five hits and five walks, striking out seven.
For the Ducks, starter Ed Yarnall lasted five and two-third innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on five hits and a walk. He struck out three. Reliever Joe Valentine took the loss after giving up the long ball to Smith, who has now homered in six consecutive games.
Game Two of the three game series will be played on Wednesday night at Citibank Park. In a game scheduled for 6:35 PM, Bears’ right-handed starter Jose Garcia (5-0) will take on Ducks’ southpaw Randy Leek (5-1).
