Winnipeg, Manitoba—Tanner Townsend delivered a two-run double and made an outstanding defensive play at third base on the game's final play as the Gary SouthShore RailCats defeated the Winnipeg Goldeyes 4-3 before a crowd of 5,024 on Tuesday night at CanWest Global Park in game one of the first round of the Northern League Playoffs.

The RailCats scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 4-2 lead and held on for the win after Winnipeg put the tying run at second base with one out in the ninth inning.

The Goldeyes took a 2-0 lead in the third against RailCats starter Willie Glen. Max Poulin walked to start the rally and went to second on a single by Fehlandt Lentini. After Demond Smith struck out, Brent Metheny singled to right. RailCats right fielder Steve Haake fielded the ball and fired a strike to the plate that would have easily gotten Poulin, but the ball came out of the glove of catcher Jose Yepez as Poulin barreled into him. Poulin scored and Lentini went to third. Walter Young followed with a sacrifice fly to bring in Lentini.

The RailCats answered in the top of the fourth with one run when Dave Detienne led off with a single and scored on Haake's double to make it 2-1.

In the sixth, Yepez was safe on an infield single with one out and Jermaine Allensworth walked. Townsend followed with a line drive to the left field corner to bring in both Yepez and Allensworth and give Gary a 3-2 lead. Nate Price followed with a single to center to drive in Townsend and make it 4-2.

Glen got stronger on the mound as the game went on. He struck out the side in both the fifth and six innings and left after seven with the two-run lead. Glen allowed five hits and two unearned runs with three walks and nine strikeouts, throwing 118 pitches.

Jim Crowell allowed a pair of singles in the eighth but worked out of a jam to record a scoreless inning in a set-up role.

Tony Cogan, the Northern League leader in saves this season, came on to work the ninth for Gary. He retired the lead-off hitter before a single to Corey Stang and a double to Poulin to make it 4-3. Cogan struck out Lentini for the second out. Smith hit a hard grounder along the third base line that Townsend with a backhanded reach, set his feet, and fired a strike to Detienne at first to end the game.

The two teams meet in game two of the series in Winnipeg on Wednesday night as Jason Shelley (7-4, 4.85) gets the start for the RailCats against Winnipeg's Mike Kusiewicz (7-4, 4.20). The series shifts to Gary for game three on Friday.
