Gary, Ind.—The Gary SouthShore RailCats Professional Baseball Club announced today that manager Greg Tagert has been named Northern League Manager of the Year in a vote of league broadcasters, writers, and managers.

The RailCats won the South Division in both 48-game halves in the league's split-season format.  They set a franchise record for most victories in a half with 30 in the first half and most victories in a season with 58.  They finished the regular season with a league-best record of 58-38 before winning the first round of the playoffs by defeating the Winnipeg Goldeyes three-games-to-two in a best-of-five series.  The RailCats led the league in both team pitching and team fielding this season.

The RailCats are currently battling Calgary in the league Championship Series.

Tagert, a native of Vacaville, California, has guided the RailCats to the Northern League Championship Series in all three seasons he has been with the club.  He is 163-126 (.564) in his three seasons with the RailCats, highlighted by a league title in 2005 in his first year with the team after the RailCats had set a league record for losses in a season the previous year.

Tagert has never had a losing record in any of his 12 seasons as a manager in professional baseball and notched his 500th career victory in 2006.  His teams are known for their fundamentally sound and aggressive playing style with high-character, high-effort players who will battle until the final out.  Tagert's teams have been built around pitching and defense.

The RailCats play at Calgary tonight in game two of the 2007 Northern League Championship Series after losing 7-6 last night in the series opener.  The series moves to Northwest Indiana on Friday for game three at 7:00 p.m. at U. S. Steel Yard in Gary.  For tickets, call (219) 882-BALL.
