Kansas City, Kansas—Rob Watson hit a home run and pitched two scoreless innings as the Kansas City T-Bones shutout the Gary SouthShore RailCats 3-0 before a crowd of 5,803 on Sunday afternoon at Community America Ballpark in the last game of the 2007 regular season for both clubs.  The RailCats will open the playoffs Tuesday night in Winnipeg while the T-Bones season concluded with the win.

 

It was an usual day headlined by the fact that Kansas City's Nelson Gord played all nine positions on the field.  Gord started the game at second base, pitched the third inning, and eventually made his way to every position on the diamond.  

 

Meanwhile, the T-Bones utilized a second baseman (Watson) to pitch the first two innings, saw their first baseman (Mario Delgado) toss the final inning and earn a save, and used a pitcher (Travis Schlichting) at first base for an inning.  The RailCats used both outfielder Dale Mueller and Brett Wallace on the mound, played pitcher Steve Edsall in both center field and right field, and gave pitcher Travis Kerber an inning of work at catcher.  Both teams had their pitchers in the batting order in a league that exclusively uses the designated hitter.

 

Watson hit a home run with one out in the first inning off RailCats starting pitcher Josh Habel (12-7).  The T-Bones added single runs in the third and seventh innings and limited the RailCats to just three hits.

 

Habel was bidding to become the RailCats first-ever 13 game winner, but suffered the loss, allowing 10 hits and two runs over five innings with one walk and three strikeouts.  He threw 92 pitches in his final tune-up of the regular season.  Habel will start game three of the playoffs on Friday in Gary.

 

Mueller pitched the sixth and seventh innings and catcher Brett Wallace tossed the bottom of the eighth as manager Greg Tagert saved his bullpen for the playoffs.  Mueller allowed two hits and one run while Wallace allowed only a walk in his inning of work.

 

Gary will open the playoffs on Tuesday night at Winnipeg as Willie Glen (12-1, 3.03) gets the start.  Game two of the best-of-five series will also be played in Winnipeg on Wednesday before the series shifts to Gary for game three on Friday, September 7^th.

 

Notes:  The RailCats ended the season by winning 12 of their last 14 games and going 19-6 over their final 25 games.
