Winnipeg, Manitoba—Mike Kusiewicz tossed eight scoreless innings as the Winnipeg Goldeyes defeated the Gary SouthShore RailCats 7-0 before a crowd of 5,086 on Wednesday night at CanWest Global Park in game two of the first round of the Northern League Playoffs. The win by the Goldeyes evened the best-of-five series at one win apiece.

Winnipeg jumped out to a big 6-0 lead after two innings and Kusiewicz worked out of trouble in one inning after the next the keep the RailCats from getting back to within striking distance. The RailCats left a runner at third base in six consecutive innings from the second through the seventh, stranding a total nine men in scoring position over those six innings without plating a run. Gary went a combined 0 for 10 with men in scoring position in the game.

Winnipeg wasted no time getting their offense in gear against RailCats starting pitcher Jason Shelley. Fehlandt Lentini lined the first pitch of the first inning from Shelley to center field, Demond Smith reached on a bunt single, and Brent Metheny lined a single to right to bring in Lentini and make it 1-0 before an out was recorded. Antoin Gray added a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.

In the second, Corey Stang started the rally with a one-out single and Max Poulin walked. Lentini singled in Stang to make it 3-0, and Smith doubled in Poulin to make it 4-0. After Metheny was intentionally walked, Walter Young delivered a two-run single to increase the lead to 6-0.

Shelley left after the second inning, allowing seven hits and six earned runs with two walks and one strikeout.

Kusiewicz allowed six hits over eight scoreless innings, walking three and striking out five.

The series now shifts to Gary for game three on Friday at 7:00 p.m. at U. S. Steel Yard. Josh Habel (12-7, 2.96) will start for the RailCats against Winnipeg's Ben Moore (8-7, 5.06). For tickets, call (219) 882-2255.
