NEWARK, NJ – September 9, 2007 – With two outs in the tenth inning, Newark Bears’ first baseman Pat Peavey hit an RBI single to left field to defeat the York Revolution 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. The Bears win, coupled with the Somerset Patriots 11-3 victory against the Lancaster Barnstormers, solidifies the first round of the 2007 Atlantic League Playoffs. The Bears will face the Long Island Ducks and the Patriots will take on the Camden Riversharks.
Bears’ second baseman Javier Colina led off the tenth with a walk and stole second base to set up Peavey’s two out game-winning single. Peavey was 1-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
The Revolution tied the game at three in the top of the ninth on an RBI single by designated hitter Kelly Hunt. Hunt went 2-for- with a double and two RBI on the day.
In the bottom of the seventh, shortstop Ramon Castro singled to right field to drive in two runs and tie the game at two. In the eighth inning, right fielder Jose Herrera led off with a double, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a fielder’s choice to give the Bears a 3-2 lead. Herrera finished the game 3-for-5 with two doubles and a run scored.
York grabbed a 2-0 lead in the fifth on a run scoring single by first baseman Nate Espy and an RBI double by Hunt.
Bears’ reliever Jason DiAngelo (3-9) picked up the win after pitching a perfect tenth. Starter Dusty Bergman received a no decision after allowing two runs on five hits in six innings of work. He walked five and struck out six. York starter Bryan Edwards went nine innings, allowing three runs on eight hits and three walks, striking out six.
The Bears will head to Lancaster to play a make up game on Monday night at 7:05 PM against the Barnstormers. Right-handed starter Mark Woodyard (1-0) will face Lancaster righty Josh Stevens.
