NEWARK, NJ – September 8, 2007 – Catcher John Pachot smashed a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the Bears the lead and an eventual 10-5 victory over the York Revolution on Saturday night at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. The win improves the Bears to 29-26 in the second half and 65-53 overall.
The Bears took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on a solo home run down the left field line by designated hitter Javier Colina and an RBI single by second baseman Vic Gutierrez. Gutierrez went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
York tied the game in the top half of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by shortstop Rayner Bautista that brought in a second run after a throwing error. The Revolution grabbed a 5-2 advantage an inning later after left fielder Joe Jiannetti hit a three run home run.
Jiannetti was 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored on the night.
The Bears rallied for five runs in their half of the sixth to take a 7-5 lead. Left fielder Joey Gomes singled in a run before Pachot’s grand slam. Pachot finished the game 1-for-4 with a run scored and five RBI. The Bears added two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth to put the game out of reach.
Bears’ starter Harold Eckert (5-0) allowed five runs, only one earned, on five hits and three walks in six innings of work. He struck out seven.
The Bears and Revolution will play the rubber game of the three game series on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 3:05 PM. The Bears’ Dusty Bergman (0-0) will face York right-hander Bryan Edwards (5-4).
