NEWARK, NJ – September 2, 2007 – Catcher Jason Torres hit a three run home run in the bottom of the seventh and designated hitter Joey Gomes smacked his second two run home run of the game in the eighth to lead the Newark Bears to a 10-5 victory over the Long Island Ducks on Sunday afternoon at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. The win improves to the Bears to 25-24 in the second half and 61-51 overall.
The winning pitcher was Bears’ starter Jeriome Robertson who went seven innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on seven hits and two walks, striking out nine.
Long Island got on the board in the top of the second inning on an RBI single up the middle by designated hitter Kevin Haverbusch.
The Bears responded in the bottom half of the inning when Gomes smashed his tenth home run of the season, a two run shot to left field. In the fourth inning, the Bears made it 3-1 when first baseman Victor Rodriguez scored on a Gomes groundout. Gomes finished the game 2-for-3 with two home runs, five RBI, and three runs scored.
After Long Island closed the deficit to one in the top of the seventh, Torres connected for his fifth home run of the season that put the Bears up 6-2. In the bottom of the eighth, third baseman Corey Smith lined an RBI double down the left field line and right fielder Jose Herrera delivered a run scoring single. Smith’s double gives him 31 on the season, tying the Bears’ franchise record. Gomes capped the Bears’ scoring with his eleventh homer of the year.
The Bears will go for the sweep on Monday afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 12:05 PM. Right-handed starter Harold Eckert (4-0) will face Long Island’s Bill Pulsipher (1-0).
