GRIZZLIES CAP RECORD REGULAR SEASON
The Gateway Grizzlies capped off a record-setting regular season in fine fashion Sunday evening. The second largest crowd in franchise history saw the Grizzlies score 12 times in the first two innings en route to a 16-5 blowout of rival River City. 7,469 took in the festivities at GCS Ballpark.
Jonathan Armitage lined his 17th home run of the year into the right field lawn to put the Grizzlies up 2-0. Manny Paula added an RBI double and Ryan Sullivan drove in a pair with a single to put the Grizzlies up 6-0 after one inning.
Stephen Holdren and Paula added RBI hits in the second inning. Charlie Lisk and Jeff Vincent each homered in the inning. All combined the Grizzlies added six more runs in the inning and the led 12-0.
Lisk was 2-4 on the night with a pair of home runs and four RBIs. Paula was 2-3 with the two RBIs. Armitage was 2-4 with the homer and two RBIs. Ryan Saltzgaber added four hits in six at-bats.
Rascals' starter Albert Ayala, who had allowed just three runs on four hits in two previous starts against the Grizzlies, didn't last through the second inning. Ayala (5-5) suffered the loss lasting just 1.1 innings. He allowed nine runs on eight hits.
Grizzlies' starter Jason Herman (5-1) tossed five innings for the win. Herman allowed four runs on seven hits.
The Grizzlies banged out 21 hits Sunday night, to finish with a franchise record 928 for the year. The Grizzlies led the Frontier League in hitting with a .286 batting average, also a franchise record.
The Grizzlies open the first round of the 2007 Frontier League playoffs Tuesday night against the Washington Wild Things. Game time is 7:05 p.m. at GCS Ballpark.
