Chicago Fire and D.C. United Reserves Tie, 2-2

D.C. forward Monteiro scores game-tying goal against former club

BRIDGEVIEW, IL (Sept. 23, 2007) – The Chicago Fire Reserves (1-5-3 6pts.) and D.C. United Reserves (4-1-5 17pts.) tied, 2-2 today in a Major League Soccer Reserve Division match held at the TOYOTA PARK practice field.   A goal from forward Floyd Franks in the ninth minute gave the “Men in Red” an early lead, which was doubled in the 13th minute by midfielder John Thorrington.  D.C. midfielder Guy-Roland Kpene cut the lead in half with a 16th minute penalty kick goal and former Fire forward Jerson Monteiro proved effective for his new club, notching the game-tying goal for D.C. in the 47th minute.

In the ninth minute of the match Franks supplied the first goal of the match for the Fire Reserves.  Midfielder Landy Mattison sent a ball into the left side of the box for Franks, who took the ball on a diagonal to the left post, made a quick cut inside, and put a shot in the net - just inside the near post.

The Fire doubled their lead in the 13th minute as Franks sent a pass from the right corner to Thorrington positioned off the right post.  Thorrington aimed a shot across the goal, toward the opposite post, and put one past goalkeeper Jay Nolly.

D.C. United capitalized on a 16th minute penalty kick opportunity, awarded after Monteiro was fouled just inside Fire 18-yard box.  Kpene lined up for the kick and sent a hard shot to the lower left side of the goal.  Fire keeper Jon Busch got a hand on the ball but was unable to complete the save.

Monteiro scored the game-tying goal for D.C. in the 47th minute, with the assist credited to Kpene.  Monteiro ran onto a Kpene pass - placed behind the Fire defense - and sent a hard low shot up the middle for the final goal of the game.

The Fire Reserves return to action on Sept. 30, as they travel to Los Angeles to take on the reserves of Chivas USA (10:00 a.m., The Home Depot Center).  The D.C. United Reserves squad will take on the Toronto FC Reserves on Sept. 29, for a road contest in Toronto (9:30 p.m., BMO Field).
