NEWARK, NJ – September 12, 2007 – The Newark Bears rallied for a run in the seventh and one in the eighth to erase a 3-2 deficit and defeat the Long Island Ducks 4-3 on Wednesday night at Citibank Park. The win, their fifth straight, improves the Bears to 69-53 overall.
In the top of the seventh, with the Bears trailing 3-2, centerfielder Keith Reed drilled an opposite field solo home run, his 18th of the year, to tie the game. Reed finished the game 2-for-4 with the home run, an RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base.
Third baseman Corey Smith led off the Bears’ eighth inning with a single. Right fielder Jose Herrera followed with a double down the left field line that scored Smith, who was running on the pitch. Smith went 3-for-4 on the night with a home run, an RBI, and two runs scored. His home run in the fourth inning gave the Bears a 2-1 lead.
The Ducks got on the board in the first inning on a home run by second baseman Ray Navarette. The Bears tied the game at one in the third on a run scoring single by left fielder Ruben Mateo. After the Bears grabbed a one run advantage on Smith’s home run, the Ducks responded with back-to-back two out RBI doubles by shortstop Edgardo Alfonzo and catcher Jamie Pogue. Pogue led the Ducks, going 3-for-4 with two singles and the double.
Bears reliever Shaun Babula (1-0) picked up his first win, pitching a scoreless seventh inning. Right-hander Jeremy Hill pitched a perfect ninth for his second save. Bears’ pitchers combined to strand 12 Long Island runners on base and worked out of bases loaded jams three times without allowing a run.
The Bears will go for the sweep on Thursday night in a game scheduled for 6:35 PM. Reliever Matt Smith (1-0) will make a spot start for the Bears in order to align their playoff pitching rotation.
