NEWARK, NJ – September 12, 2007 – The Newark Bears scored 11 runs on 16 hits to defeat the Bridgeport Bluefish 11-6 in their final regular season game on Sunday afternoon at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. The Bears, who finish the season with an overall record of 72-54, will head into the playoffs having won eight of their last nine games.
In the bottom of the third with the score tied at one, Bears’ centerfielder Keith Reed drilled a two run home run to left center for a two run lead. Three batters later, third baseman Corey Smith lifted a two run homer to left for a 5-1 advantage. Reed finished the season homering in five of his last six games and Smith has homered in five consecutive games. As a team, the Bears have hit 18 home runs in their final six games.
The Bluefish rallied in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at five. The big hits came from designated hitter Quentin McCracken, who singled in a run, and second baseman Jay Caliguiri, who had an RBI double.
Right fielder Jose Herrera led off the Bears’ fourth inning with a home run to right-centerfield to regain the lead. Later in the inning, second baseman Javier Colina hit a two RBI double down the left field line for an 8-5 lead. The hit gave Colina 101 RBI on the season, making him just the third player in franchise history to surpass the 100 RBI mark.
The Bears added an RBI single in the fifth and two in the seventh and held on for the 11-8 victory. Left-hander Jeriome Robertson (5-5) picked up the win for the Bears with one and one-third innings of scoreless relief.
The Bears will meet the Long Island Ducks in the Atlantic League Divisional Series beginning Tuesday, September 18th at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. Game One is slated to begin at 7:05 PM with Bears’ right-handed starter Harold Eckert (5-0) squaring off against Duck’s southpaw Ed Yarnall (5-5).
