NEWARK, NJ – September 1, 2007 – Reliever Jason DiAngelo struck out catcher Jared Price with two men on base to nail down his 14th save of the season and give the Newark Bears a 4-2 victory over the Long Island Ducks on Saturday night at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. The Bears’ overall record improves to 60-51, making it the fifth time in franchise history that they have reached the 60 win mark.
Long Island took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on back-to-back RBI singles by first baseman P.J. Rose and designated hitter Carl Everett. Everett finished the game 2-for-4 with an RBI.
The Bears responded in the bottom of the first to go up 3-2. After loading the bases, first baseman Victor Rodriguez lined a single to centerfield to drive in two runs. Third baseman Corey Smith followed with a run-scoring double to right centerfield. Rodriguez went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Smith was 3-for-4 with an RBI.
The score held until the bottom of the eighth when second baseman Javier Colina smacked home run down the left field line to give the Bears a 4-2 lead.
Bears’ starter Jose Garcia (4-0) allowed one earned run on four hits and two walks in six innings of work. He struck out six. Reliever Jason DiAngelo pitched the ninth for his 14th save of the season
Long Island’s John Halama pitched a complete game, surrendering four runs, three earned, on 10 hits and one walk, striking out three.
The Bears and Ducks will play game two of the three game series on Sunday afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 3:05 PM. Two left-handers will square off as the Bears’ Jeriome Robertson (3-4) takes on the Ducks’ Ed Yarnall (5-3).
