NEWARK, NJ September 11, 2007 First baseman Pat Peavey hit a sacrifice-fly to cap a three run ninth inning as the Newark Bears defeated the Long Island Ducks 8-6 on Tuesday night at Citibank Park. The Bears have now won four consecutive games and nine of their last 11.
In the ninth, after a walk and a hit batter, the Bears scored two runs on fielding errors before Peavey drove in the third run. Reliever Jeremy Hill pitched the bottom half of the ninth for his first save. First baseman Jared Price led off the Ducks ninth with a home run and the next two batters reached base to bring the winning run to the plate with no one out, but Hill was able to retire the next three batters to seal the victory.
After the two teams traded RBI groundouts in the first inning, the Bears got a run in the second on a solo home run to centerfield by third baseman Corey Smith and one in the third on a run scoring single by right fielder Jose Herrera for a 3-1 advantage. The Bears pushed the lead to four in the top of the fifth when centerfielder Keith Reed led off with his 17th home run of the season and designated hitter Joey Gomes delivered an RBI single to right field.
Long Island scored two in their half of the fifth on a wild pitch and an RBI groundout by shortstop Bryant Nelson. In the seventh, Nelson added a sacrifice-fly and second baseman Ray Navarette hit an RBI single to tie the game at five.
Bears reliever Matt Smith (1-0) picked up the win with one and one-third innings of shutout relief. Smith, who allowed a walk and hit a batter, struck out three.
Offensively for the Bears, Herrera went 2-for-5 with two RBI and Reed was 2-for-5 with the home run and an RBI.
The Bears and Ducks will play game two of the three game set on Wednesday night at 7:05 PM. Bears southpaw Jeriome Robertson (4-5) is the scheduled starter.
