NEWARK, NJ September 13, 2007 The Newark Bears scored six runs in the ninth inning off of Long Island Ducks closer Danny Graves to win a three hour and forty-five minute marathon 15-11 on Thursday night at Citibank Park. The Bears, winners of six consecutive games, have now reached the 70 win plateau for just the third time in franchise history.
Newarks three game sweep gives them a split of the season series with Long Island at nine games apiece. The two teams will meet in the best-of-three Divisional Series beginning on Tuesday, September 18th at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
The Bears, who pounded out 19 hits and a season high five home runs, got the ninth inning started with back-to-back singles by third baseman Corey Smith and right fielder Ruben Mateo. First baseman Pat Peavey followed with a base hit to drive in Smith and tie the game at ten. The next batter, catcher Jason Torres, squared to bunt, but pulled the bat back at the last second and slapped the ball into left field for an RBI. After an error loaded the bases, centerfielder Keith Reed lined a two run single and second baseman Javier Colina capped the scoring with a two RBI double.
Designated hitter Victor Rodriguez led the offensive attack, going 4-for-6 with a double, a home run, an RBI, and two runs scored. Mateo went 3-for-5 with two home runs, two RBI, and three runs scored. Colina drove in three runs to give him 99 on the year and Smith drilled a three run home run in the seventh, his third long ball in as many days.
For the Ducks, left fielder Carl Everett went 4-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI, and a run scored. Shortstop Edgardo Alfonzo singled, homered, and drove in three.
Bears reliever Jeremy Hill (3-0), who recorded a save in each of the first two games of this series, worked two innings for the win.
The Bears will head back to The Den to take on the Bridgeport Bluefish in their final regular season series. Left-handed starter Dusty Bergman (0-0) will make his third start in a Bears uniform.
