NEWARK, NJ – September 19, 2007 – The Newark Bears took a 3-0 lead after six innings and held off the Long Island Ducks for a 3-2 victory and a sweep in the Divisional Series on Wednesday night at Citibank Park.  The Bears will advance to the Atlantic League Championship Series where they will face either the Camden Riversharks or the Somerset Patriots, who will play a deciding Game Three tomorrow evening.

The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning on a solo home run to left field by catcher John Pachot.  In the sixth, the Bears added two more runs on an RBI single by first baseman Victor Rodriguez and a run scoring double by third baseman Corey Smith.  Rodriguez finished the night 3-for-5 and Smith went 3-for-4.

Long Island rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh.  Third baseman Bryant Nelson led off with a solo homer to right field and second baseman Ray Navarrete hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded.

The Ducks put the tying run on third in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings, but the Bears’ bullpen was able to keep the third run off the board.  In the seventh, southpaw Shaun Babula got Ducks’ first baseman P.J. Rose to pop up to end the inning.  Right-hander Justin Huisman induced a 5-4-3 double play to end the threat in the eighth inning.  Reliever Jeremy Hill picked up the save after getting Navarrete to groundout with the tying run on third in the ninth.

Bears’ starter Jose Garcia picked up the win, going six and two-thirds, allowing two runs on four hits and four walks, striking out three.  Ducks’ left-hander Randy Leek took the loss.  He surrendered three runs on nine hits and two walks in seven innings of work.  Leek struck out four.

The Bears will play Games One and Two of the Championship Series on the road.  Game Three and, if necessary, Games Four and Five will played at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.  Game Three will be on Sunday, September 23rd, Game Four would be on Monday, September 24th, and Game Five would be played on September 25th.  First pitch for games at The Den is scheduled for 7:05 PM.  Fans who attended the Bears 5-4 win in Game One of the Divisional Series on Tuesday, September 18th can redeem their ticket stub for all three games of the Championship Series played in Newark.
