JACKHAMMERS END SEASON WITH A 7-4 WIN OVER THE SCHAUMBURG FLYERS AT SILVER CROSS FIELD

 

JOLIET, IL- Nate Sevier (13-4) pitched six and two-thirds innings to pick up his 13th win of the season and Juan Diaz (2-2) smacked his 28th home run of the season to help the Joliet JackHammers to a 7-4 win over the Schaumburg Flyers (19-29) before 4,748 fans at Silver Cross Field on Sunday night. The JackHammers (23-25) close out the 2007 Northern League season with a six-game winning streak.

 

The JackHammers struck first on Sunday night with two runs in the first inning against Schaumburg Flyers starting pitcher Jake Toohey (0-3). Tim Hutting (2-4) reached base with a one-out single and Diaz smacked a solo home run over the left field wall for a 2-0 JackHammers lead.

 

The Flyers tied the game with two runs in the second inning against JackHammers hurler Nate Sevier. Dario Delgado (2-3) reached base with a one-out single and stole second base. Billy Malone (0-3) worked a walk and Kyle Leon (1-3) flew out to center field.

 

Alex Derhak (2-3) and Robert Matlock (2-4) followed with RBI singles to tie the game at 2-2.

 

Joliet scored one run in the third inning thanks to solid hitting by the JackHammers rookie centerfielder Matt Mazurek (1-4). Chris Brown (2-4), who led off the inning with a single, scored all the way from first base. The JackHammers took a 3-2 lead.

 

Schaumburg scored one run against Sevier in the fourth inning. Leon reached base with a one-out single and moved to second base when Derhak was hit by a pitch. Matlock hit an RBI single to tie the game at 3-3.

 

The Flyers took the lead in the fifth inning thanks to an RBI single by Leon. Pat O’Sullivan (1-4) led off the inning with a one-out double and moved to third base on a single by Delgado.

 

Leon hit an RBI single to score O’Sullivan and give the Flyers a 4-3 lead.

 

The JackHammers scored three runs in the seventh inning to take a 6-4 lead. Cory Harris (1-5) led off the inning with a single and went to second base on a single by Hutting. A wild pitch by Toohey moved both runners to second and third base.  The Flyers elected to walk Diaz to load the bases.

 

Harris scored on a wild pitch from Toohey and Jake Whitesides (3-4) hit a two-run single to round out the scoring in the seventh inning.

 

Sevier pitched six and two-thirds innings and allowed four runs on eight hits to pick up his 13th victory of the season. He finished the season tied with Dane Renkert from the Fargo-Moorhead for first in the league with 13 wins.

 

Loose Gravel: Diaz finishes the 2007 Northern League season with 28 home runs, which is tied for fifth on the all-time list for home runs in a single season. Diaz finished tied with Justin Hendrickson of the Schaumburg Flyers, who accomplished the mark back in the 2005 season.

 

The JackHammers finish second half of the 2007 season with a 22-25 record and a 45-51 mark through the entire 96 game Northern League schedule. The JackHammers wrap up the 2007 second-half season in third place in the South Division.
