NEWARK, NJ – August 25, 2007 – The Newark Bears put the tying run on third with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, but closer Franklin Nunez struckout second baseman Ramon Castro to give the York Revolution a 4-3 victory at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium on Saturday night.

The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when left-fielder Joey Gomes scored on a groundout by catcher Jason Torres. Gomes finished the night 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, and a run scored.

The Revolution rallied for three runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to go up 4-1. Right-fielder Jason Aspito scored on a wild pitch and centerfielder Justin Singleton followed two batters later with a two-run home run. An inning later, designated hitter Luis Cotto doubled, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on a wild pitch.

In the bottom half of the seventh inning, third baseman Victor Gutierrez drilled a home run to left-centerfield to pull the Bears within two. Gutierrez went 2-for-3 on the night. In the eighth, first baseman Corey Smith singled up the middle to drive in Castro and close the deficit to one.

York’s Jason Olson (5-2) picked up the win. In six innings of work, he allowed one earned run on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Nunez picked up his 12^th save of the season with one and one-third scoreless innings.

Bears’ starter Mark Phillips (1-3) took the loss, allowing four runs, all earned, on four hits and two walks in five and one-third innings.

The Bears will begin a three game series against the Road Warriors on Sunday afternoon at 3:05 PM. Right-hander Carlos Mirabal (8-7) will take the ball for the Bears.
