THREE HOME RUNS SINKS BEARS 5-2
NEWARK, NJ – August 18, 2007 – The Lancaster Barnstormers belted three home solo home runs to defeat the Newark Bears 5-2 Saturday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
Bears shortstop Ramon Castro broke the scoreless tie in the third inning with his fifth home run of the season, giving the Bears a 1-0 lead, however the Barnstormers came back in the bottom of the fourth inning when second baseman Mike Woods and left-fielder Dominick Ambrosini each hit a solo home run to give Lancaster a 2-1 advantage. It was Woods eighth of the season, and Amobrosini’s 17th.
The score remained 2-1 until the top of the sixth inning when Bears third baseman Corey Smith hit an RBI double to tie the game at two. Lancaster came right back in the bottom half of the inning when center-fielder Jutt Hileman hit a sacrifice-fly and first baseman Jeremy Todd hit an RBI single to put Lancaster ahead 4-2. Designated hitter Eric Crozier cap the scoring in the bottom of the seventh inning with his second home run of the season to put Lancaster ahead 5-2.
For the Bears, Castro finished the game 2-for-5 with a single, home run, and an RBI, and Smith went 2-for-4 with a single, double, and RBI. Center-fielder Keith Reed finished the game 1-for-3 extending his hitting streak to ten games. Woods ended the night 2-for-3 with a single, home run, and a walk to lead the Barnstormers.
Delvis Pacheco (6-2) suffered his first loss since May 29th allowing five runs on six hits in seven innings while striking out six. Rob Henkel (6-8) earned the victory surrendering two runs on seven hits in six innings and Derrick DePriest picked up his 16th save of the season pitching a perfect ninth inning striking out two.
The Bears and Barnstormers will play the rubber game of the three-game series Sunday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 6:05 PM. Mark Phillips (1-2) will take the mound for the Bears against Josh Stevens (8-6) for Lancaster.
