Schaumburg, Ill.—Jose Yepez lined a two-out single to right to drive in Steve Haake from second base to break a 1-1 tie with two outs in the top of the 13^th inning as the Gary SouthShore RailCats defeated the Schaumburg Flyers 2-1 in the first game of a doubleheader on Tuesday. The game lasted three hours, 53 minutes.

Gary reliever Matt Brinkman tossed two scoreless innings to pick up his first professional victory. Schaumburg's Brandon Culp (0-4) worked three innings of relief but allowed the run in the 13^th to take the loss.

Schaumburg scored in the top of the first inning when Anthony Monegan led off with his fourth home run of the season to put the Flyers ahead 1-0. The RailCats answered with a run in the second when Haake walked, went to third on a double by Yepez, and scored on an infield hit by Jermaine Allensworth to tie the game at 1-1. The two teams combined to play scoreless baseball over the next 10 innings.

Haake lined a hit to right with two outs in the 13^th and the ball skipped by right fielder Robert Matlock for an error as Haake went to second. Yepez then broke the tie with his hit to right.

In the bottom of the 13^th, Schaumburg's Mike Rohde led off with a single to right. But Brinkman got the next two hitters on fly balls before issuing a two-out walk to Christian Snavely to put the tying run in scoring position. Brinkman struck out Billy Malone to end the game.

RailCats starting pitcher Willie Glen struck out eight batters over six innings and broke the franchise record for strikeouts in a single season. With 151 strikeouts, Glen is only two away from the "modern" Northern League record of 153 set by Bobby Madritsch of Winnipeg in 2002.

The second game of the doubleheader was expected to start around 10:30 p.m.

Notes: Jermaine Allensworth had four hits for Gary while Schaumburg's Jimmy Hurst extended his hitting streak to 18 straight games…Rohde also extended his hitting streak to 13 straight.

The RailCats battle the Flyers again Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. in Schaumburg. Jason Shelley (5-4, 5.38) will start for Gary against Schaumburg's Nat Harris (9-5, 5.07). The RailCats open a five game series at home against Joliet starting Thursday in their final homestand of the regular season.
