Kansas City, Kansas—In the longest game in the history of both clubs, the Gary SouthShore RailCats broke a 1-1 tie with five runs in the top of the 16^th inning and held on to defeat the Kansas City T-Bones 6-4 on Friday night before a crowd of 6,253 at Community America Ballpark. The game lasted five hours and 46 minutes, two minutes short of the Northern League record, and ended at 12:53 a.m.

The win by the RailCats moved Kansas City to the brink of elimination in the playoff race. One Gary win over the final two games of the season will eliminate Kansas City and lift Winnipeg into the post-season picture.

Prior to the 16^th inning, the only scoring in the game came on a pair of solo home runs. Kansas City's Calvin Pickering belted a solo shot in the second, and Gary's Mike Reese drilled one in the sixth to tie the game.

In the top of the 16^th, the RailCats put runners at first and second with two outs. Kansas City manager Andy McCauley elected to walk Tanner Townsend intentionally to load the bases because the RailCats had lifted their designated hitter and had the pitcher's spot in the batting order due up next. Starting pitcher Travis Kerber, a catcher in college, went to the plate to pinch hit for David Byard, and T-Bones pitcher Raymond Jenkins plunked him with the first pitch to force in the tie-breaking run. Reese followed with a grand slam home run to right to give the RailCats a 6-1 lead.

In the bottom of the 16^th, the RailCats inserted outfielder Dale Mueller into the game to pitch after using four of their available five relievers. Only closer Tony Cogan, who had pitched both Wednesday and Thursday, had not been used. But when the T-Bones loaded the bases with two outs against Mueller, the RailCats brought on Cogan. He allowed a pair of hits as three runs scored and the T-Bones had the winning run at the plate, but Cogan got Rob Watson to fly out to right, to Mueller ironically, to end the game.

Kansas City had several good chances to win the game. They loaded the bases with no outs in the 11^th, but RailCats left fielder Nate Price threw out Neb Brown at the plate trying to score on a fly ball to preserve the game. With the bases loaded and one out in the 12^th inning, Brown grounded into an inning-ending double play. The RailCats also turned an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth to preserve a 1-1 tie.

The RailCats meet the T-Bones in the fourth game of the five game series on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. Travis Kerber (7-7, 4.53) will start for Gary against Kansas City's Anthony Boughner (8-4, 5.08).

Notes: The RailCats have won 11 of the last 12 games and they are 18-5 over the last 23 games…Kansas City stranded 22 runners, one short of the league record…The RailCats used every player on their roster except starting pitcher Josh Habel. Starting pitcher Willie Glen was in the game in right field for part of the 16^th inning…Reese became the first RailCats player to hit two home runs in the same game this season…The game eclipsed the RailCats club record for longest game, minutes, by an hour and 35 minutes. The previous longest game was four hours and eleven minutes. The previous longest game, innings, was 15.
