Joliet, Ill.—Joliet pitcher Nate Sevier fired a seven inning no-hitter in game two of a doubleheader as the JackHammers and Gary SouthShore RailCats split a twin-bill on Saturday night.  The RailCats won the first game 4-2 while the JackHammers took the nightcap 3-0 before a crowd of 4,673 at Silver Cross Field. 

 

Sevier (11-3) allowed only three base runners.  He hit the second batter of the game, saw a RailCats batter reach on an error later in the first inning, and issued a sixth inning lead-off walk while striking out eight.  The RailCats were no-hit for the first time in their six-year history.

 

The RailCats won the first game, which was the completion of a suspended game from August 5^th.  The game resumed with no score in the fifth inning and Gary quickly gained the lead.  Brett Wallace led off with a single and scored on Dave Detienne's double.  Detienne later scored on Tanner Townsend's double to make it 2-0.

 

After Joliet scored once in the sixth, the RailCats answered with two more runs in the top of the eighth.  Jermaine Allensworth and Dale Mueller each delivered run-scoring singles in the inning to put Gary up 4-1.  Joliet scored one run in the bottom of the eighth to close out the scoring.

 

Gary's Tony Cogan notched his 18^th save of the season, working a scoreless ninth, to break the club single-season record of 17 set by Derek Lopez in 2005.

 

Joliet scored twice in the first inning of game two when Chad Ehrnsberger doubled with two outs to bring in Cory Harris and Derek Nicholson.  Juan Diaz added a solo home run in the fifth to close out the scoring.  Travis Kerber tossed a complete game for the RailCats but took the loss to fall to 6-6, allowing eight hits and three runs over six innings with one walk and five strikeouts.

 

The only RailCats threat against Sevier came in the first inning when an Ehrnsberger throwing error after Jay Pecci was hit by a pitch put runners at second and third with one out.  But Steve Haake popped to shortstop and Jose Yepez grounded to third to end the inning.  Sevier allowed only one more base runner the rest of the way.

 

The RailCats battle the JackHammers again Sunday in Joliet at 5:05 p.m.  Willie Glen (10-1, 3.23) will start for Gary against Joliet's Matt Smith (5-6, 5.18).  The RailCats open a three game series at Schaumburg on Monday night and return home Thursday to begin their final homestand of the regular season against Joliet.
