Gary, Ind.—Kazuaki Minami tossed eight strong innings and Nelson Castro collected three hits as the Calgary Vipers defeated the Gary SouthShore RailCats 5-2 on Sunday afternoon before a crowd of 4,647 at U. S. Steel Yard. The Vipers won two of three in the series while the RailCats completed a six game homestand with a record of 3-3.

Minami (8-4) allowed just five hits and two runs (one earned) over eight innings while walking two and striking out three. Curtis Moenter pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his fourth save.

The RailCats took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning when Eric Blakeley reached on a two-base error by Calgary third baseman Carlos Duncan and scored on Jay Pecci's single to center.

But the Vipers took the lead for good in the top of the sixth. Northern League batting leader Darryl Brinkley led off the inning with a double to center and went to third on Castro's bunt single. Duncan followed with a hit to right to drive in Brinkley and move Castro to third. Castro scored when Jason Colson grounded into a double play.

The Vipers scored three more runs in the eighth to take a commanding lead. Brinkley led off the inning with a walk and went to third on Castro's single to left center. Duncan was walked intentionally to load the bases with no one out. Colson delivered a sacrifice fly to center as all three runners attempted to advance one base. But when second baseman Eric McNamee's relay throw into second got away, Castro and Duncan both raced in to score after Brinkley to make it 5-1.

The RailCats scored once in the eighth on a walk to Tanner Townsend, a single by Steve Haake moving Townsend to third, and a ground out by Brett Wallace to make it 5-2 and close out the scoring.

The RailCats finished with six hits, including two by McNamee, who is batting .394 over his last nine games.

The RailCats are off Monday before opening a 10 game road trip at Kansas City on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. Travis Kerber (5-5, 4.29) will start for Gary against Kansas City's Chris Krawczyk (4-3, 5.19).
