Gary, Ind.—Anthony Boughner tossed seven strong innings and Al Benjamin hit a two-run home run as the Kansas City T-Bones defeated the slumping Gary SouthShore RailCats 4-2 on Tuesday night before a crowd of 2,477 at U. S. Steel Yard. The win was the T-Bones fifth straight and eighth in their last 10 games. The loss was the RailCats fifth straight and their 10th in the last 12 games.
Benjamin connected on a titanic home run high off the video board above the left-center field fence with a man aboard in the first inning to give Kansas City a 2-0 lead.
The RailCats answered with two runs in the bottom of the second to tie the game. Jermaine Allensworth hit a long home run to left, his second of the year, to make it a 2-1 game. Nate Price hustled out an infield hit, went to second on a wild pitch, and scored on Eric McNamee's single to left to tie the game. But the RailCats did not collect another base hit over the final seven innings of the game. They had only one base runner after the second inning, a two-out walk to Dale Mueller in the fifth.
Kansas City took the lead for good in the fourth when Calvin Pickering led off with a single to right, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Neb Brown, to third on Patrick Arlis' single, and scored on a hit to center by Nick Jaros to give the T-Bones a 3-2 lead. They added the final run of the game in the eighth on a double by Benjamin and a single by Brown to make it 4-2.
Boughner allowed four hits and one walk over seven innings with three strikeouts to improve his record to 6-3. Matt Schweitzer pitched a perfect ninth for his fifth save.
RailCats starter Josh Habel (9-6) pitched well against the big-hitting T-Bones offense but took the loss. He allowed six hits and three runs over six innings, walking three and striking out four.
The RailCats host the T-Bones again Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at the Steel Yard. Jason Shelley (3-3, 6.58) will start for
Notes: The RailCats have scored just 17 runs over their last nine games and have not scored more than three runs in a game since July 26th…The T-Bones won for the just the fourth time this season in games when they scored less than five runs. They were 3-18 when scoring four or less entering the game.
