Kansas City, Kansas—Mario Delgado's run-scoring single in the bottom of the seventh inning broke a 5-5 tie as the Kansas City T-Bones avoided a three game sweep and defeated the Gary SouthShore RailCats 9-5 before a crowd of 6,714 at Community America Ballpark on Thursday night.

The RailCats broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the fifth inning when Steve Haake doubled with two outs to score Eric McNamee from first base and give the RailCats a 4-3 lead. Kansas City's Rob Watson drilled a two-run home in the bottom of the inning to lift the T-Bones to a 5-4 lead.

Gary's Eric Blakeley connected on his first home run of the season, a solo shot in the top of the seventh, to tie the game at 5-5.

In the bottom of the seventh, RailCats reliever Steve Edsall entered the game and walked the first man he faced, Geoff McCallum, on four pitches. A passed ball against Jose Yepez allowed McCallum to go to second. After Edsall struck out Watson for the first out, Jim Crowell replaced Edsall and yielded Delgado's base hit to right to break the tie. Kansas City took advantage of two Gary errors to add three insurance runs in the eighth to close out the scoring.

Al Benjamin hit a three-run home run in the first inning to give the T-Bones an early 3-0 lead before the RailCats tied the game in the second with a three run inning that featured a costly throwing error on McCallum, the Kansas City shortstop, after the RailCats had loaded the bases with no outs.

Blakeley and Steve Haake led an 11-hit RailCats attack with three hits apiece. Haake had two doubles, leaving him one short of the club's single season record. Eric McNamee went 1 for 4 to extend his hitting streak to 10 straight.

Danny Core (4-0) pitched two innings of relief to earn the win for Kansas City. Edsall (1-3) was charged with the loss.

The RailCats travel to Joliet to take on the JackHammers Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Jason Shelley (4-4, 5.53) will start for Gary against Joliet's Josh Regits (1-1, 4.05). The two clubs will resume a suspended game on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. in the fifth inning with the game scoreless. That game will be followed by the regularly scheduled game, which will be a seven inning game.
