PHILLIPS TOSSES GEM IN BEARS VICTORY
NEWARK, NJ – August 4, 2007 – Newly acquired left-handed pitcher Mark Phillips (1-0) allowed four runs, two earned, on four hits while striking out six in 5.2 innings pitched as the Newark Bears defeated the Somerset Patriots 8-6 Saturday evening at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. With the win, Phillips earned his first victory in his first appearance since July of 2003.
Bears first baseman Victor Rodriguez began the Bears scoring in the bottom of the first inning with a two-run single extending his hitting streak to a Bears season high 17 games.
With the Bears trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning, third baseman Corey Smith hit a solo home run over the batters eye in centerfield for his 11th of the season, and catcher Jason Torres hit a two-run double to give Newark the 5-3 advantage. Center-fielder Keith Reed and second baseman Javier Colina added RBI singles in the bottom of the sixth, while right-fielder Jose Herrera added a solo home run, his seventh of the season, in the bottom of the seventh to cap the Bears scoring.
For the Patriots, starting catcher Travis Anderson and center-fielder Mike Lockwood each hit RBI groundouts in the top of the second and third respectively. Designated hitter Brandon Larson added an RBI single in the top of the sixth, pinch hitter Alan Zinter hit a sacrifice-fly and back-up catcher Jason Belcher hit an RBI double in the top of the eighth. Lockwood ended the game 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI.
Reed and Rodriguez each finished the game 3-for-5, while left-fielder Joey Gomes went 3-for-3 with one run scored.
Brian Adams (11-2) took the loss surrendering six runs on 13 hits in 5.1 innings pitched and Jason DiAngelo picked up his 11th save of the season throwing a scoreless ninth inning.
The Bears and Patriots will play the rubber game of the three-game series Sunday afternoon at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 3:05 PM. Jose Garcia (1-0) will take the mound for the Bears against Keith Ramsey (5-4) for the Patriots.
