PACHOT’S RBI SINGLE IN TENTH DEFEATS ROAD WARRIORS
NEWARK, NJ – August 16, 2007 – Newark Bears catcher John Pachot, who entered the game in the ninth inning, singled in the bottom of the tenth to score shortstop Donaldo Mendez and defeat the Road Warriors 7-6 Thursday afternoon in front of 4,167 fans at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. In addition to the win, Corey Smith (1-0) earned his first professional victory tossing a scoreless top of the tenth inning striking out one.
With two outs in the tenth, Mendez reached base on a fielding error by Road Warriors pitcher Chris Eickhorst. He stole second base and reached third base on a throwing error by catcher Fleming Baez. Pachot followed with an RBI infield hit to shortstop to end the game.
With the Bears trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the eighth inning, first baseman Victor Rodriguez hit a three-run home run, his tenth of the season, to tie the game. Starting catcher Jason Torres hit an RBI double to give Newark a 5-4 lead, and left-fielder Marcus Nettles gave the Bears an insurance run with an RBI single.
The Road Warriors would come back to the tie the game at six in the top of the ninth when designated hitter Omar Garcia hit an RBI groundout and left-fielder Jason Bryan hit an RBI single.
Road Warriors right-fielder Steven Doetsch broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning with a two-run home run, his 18th of the season. After Bears second baseman Javier Colina cut the lead in half with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth, his 21st of the year, Baez hit an RBI single in the top of the fifth and Doetsch hit an RBI single in the top of the sixth to give the Road Warriors the 4-1 advantage.
For the Bears Colina ended the game 3-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI, while Nettles, Rodriguez, and third baseman Pat Peavey each added two hits. Doetsch finished the game 3-for-5 with a run scored and three RBI.
Eichkorst (0-2) took the loss allowing one run on one hit in 0.2 innings pitched.
The Bears will begin a six-game road trip Friday evening against the Lancaster Barnstormers. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
