Kansas City Takes Rain-Shortened Rubber Match, 9-2
Pickering goes four-for-four with two RBI in the contest
JOLIET, Ill. – Mother Nature made her presence felt tonight, but not until Kansas City took a 9-2 lead into the bottom of the eighth inning before the skies opened up, forcing the game to end early with the T-Bones picking up the victory. With the weather ending the contest in the middle of the eighth, the game reverted back to the end of the seventh inning with the T-Bones up 9-2.
One night after Joliet hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning, Kansas City accomplished the feat as Al Benjamin and Calvin Pickering doubled up to give the T-Bones an early 3-0 lead off Josh Regits heading into the bottom of the first.
Joliet got a run back in the bottom of the first when an RBI single by Chad Ehrnsberger plated Cory Harris, who led off the frame with a double. Kansas City starter Chris Krawczyk held the JackHammers scoreless through the next four innings, allowing another run on a solo home run by Juan Diaz in the sixth for Joliet's second and final run of the game.
Krawczyk allowed two runs on just three hits in six innings in the victory, improving to 6-4 on the season.
Kansas City scored two more runs in the third inning on RBI singles from Pickering and Patrick Arlis, and plated two more in the fifth on RBI singles from Arlis and Aharon Eggleston, pushing their lead to 7-1 after five innings. Regits was charged with six runs, four earned, on eight hits in four-plus innings as the right-hander dropped to 1-3 on the year.
After Diaz's home run put the score at 7-2, Kansas City plated two more in the seventh on a two-RBI single from Nelson Gord to push their lead to 9-2. Gord was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a double.
Raymond Jenkins came in for Krawczyk in the seventh and walked the first three batters he faced. Harris then lined into a double play at first and Jenkins induced a groundout from Tim Hutting to end the threat without a run scoring.
Geoff McCallum walked to lead off the top of the eighth but was left stranded, sending the game into the bottom of the eighth with no change in the score. Before a pitch was thrown, the rains came and forced the game to be called after a delay that lasted just under an hour. The victory gives Kansas City a five and-a-half lead over Joliet and a seven game lead over Schaumburg, who lost to Gary earlier in the night. Their lead over second-place Gary sits at three and-a-half games with 10 to play.
Pickering reached base and scored in every plate appearance tonight, going four-for-four with a double, home run and two RBI in the contest.
The T-Bones have a day off before heading to Schaumburg for a five-game set beginning Friday. First pitch for game one of that series is scheduled for 7:05.
Game Notes: Kansas City out hit the JackHammers 14-3 in the contest…Pickering's performance comes one day after he saw his 33 game on-base streak come to an end. He has reached safely in all but five of his 80 games played this season…Tonight's start was Krawczyk's first career start at Silver Cross Field and his fifth career appearance versus the JackHammers…Regits falls to 0-3 with a 7.50 ERA at home this season.
