Kansas City, Kansas—Josh Habel allowed just two hits over eight scoreless innings and established a new club record for consecutive scoreless innings as the Gary SouthShore RailCats defeated the Kansas City T-Bones 3-0 on Wednesday night before a crowd of 4,304 at Community America Ballpark.  The win moved the RailCats into a tie with Kansas City atop the Northern League's South Division with four games to play.

Wednesday's win was the RailCats 55th of the year, setting a new club record for most victories in a season.  The previous record was set in 2005 when they won 54 games on the way to a league title.

Habel, who was named Northern League Pitcher of the Week on Monday after tossing a one-hit shutout in his previous start, allowed only two base runners over the first seven innings while facing the minimum 21 batters.  He allowed a first inning single to Rob Watson and hit Nelson Gord with a pitch in the third before retiring 15 straight hitters until allowing a double to Neb Brown in the eighth.  After Brown's double, Habel issued his only walk of the night to Patrick Arlis to bring the tying run to the plate, but he struck out Gord to retire the side.

Tony Cogan pitched a perfect ninth inning to pick up his league-leading 23rd save.

Habel has thrown 24 and one-third consecutive scoreless innings to break the club record of 21 set earlier this season by Chad Blackwell.  Over Habel's last two starts, he has allowed just three hits in 17 innings.  Habel improved to 12-6 with the win, moving into a tie for the league lead in victories with Fargo-Moorhead's Dane Renkert and Joliet's Nate Sevier.  Habel also took over the league lead in earned run average, lowering his mark to 2.94, one point better than Joliet's Brian Forystek.

Gary took a 2-0 lead in the second inning when Tanner Townsend singled and scored on Mike Reese's triple to right-center field.  Reese scored on Eric McNamee's sacrifice fly.

In the seventh, McNamee walked to start the inning, went to second on Jay Pecci's sacrifice bunt, and scored all the way from second on a wild pitch.

Kansas City starter Rick DeHart (2-4) took the loss, allowing two runs in six innings on six hits with four walks and no strikeouts.

The RailCats meet the T-Bones in the second game of the five game series on Thursday at 7:05 p.m.  Willie Glen (11-1, 3.01) will start for Gary against Kansas City's Chris Krawczyk (6-4, 5.38).

Notes:  The RailCats have won nine of the last 10 games and they are 16-5 over the last 21 games.
