GRIZZLIES WIN 50TH
The Gateway Grizzlies won their 50th game of the season Friday night, defeating the Evansville Otters 9-5 in front of 2,055 at Bosse Field in Evansville, Ind. It is the first time since 2004 the Grizzlies have won 50 games in a season, and the fastest they have done it. They won their 50th on August 18 in 2004.
The win lowers the Grizzlies' magic number to clinch the West Division to nine, meaning any combinations of Grizzlies wins and Southern Illinois losses totaling nine gives the Grizzlies the West Division title.
The Grizzlies (50-23) got out in front with a five run second inning. Dustin Roberts hit his 22nd home run of the year to put the Grizzlies up 1-0. Later in the inning, with the bases loaded, Jeff Vincent lined a pitch off the right field wall for a three-run double.
Evansville (30-44) added a run in the second, and three in the third to make it a 5-4 Grizzlies lead.
Ryan Sullivan led off the fourth inning with his sixth home run of the year to make it 6-4 Grizzlies. The Grizzlies added another in the fifth to make it 7-4.
Evansville answered with a run in the fifth to cut the lead to 7-5. All five Otters' runs came off of starter Erik Dessau. Dessau (11-1) earned the win despite pitching his shortest game of the year. He allowed five runs in five innings on 11 hits. He walked two and struck out one.
Charlie Lisk hit his 11th homer of the year with one out in the ninth, and Jonathan Armitage added an RBI later in the inning for the 9-5 final.
The Grizzlies and the Otters will continue the series with a 7:05 first pitch Saturday night at Bosse Field in Evansville, Ind.
