GRIZZLIES WIN WILD ONE FROM WASHINGTON
The Gateway Grizzlies banged out 20 hits Friday night, en route to an 18-12 win over the visiting Washington Wild Things in front of 4,587 at GCS Ballpark. The win, coupled with a Southern Illinois loss, drops to the Grizzlies "magic number" to two.
The win improves the Grizzlies to 54-25. Washington drops to 45-33.
Mike Breyman paced the Grizzlies offense. Breyman was 4-6 with two home runs and a game-high five RBIs. Breyman's home run was the 50th of his Frontier League career, tying for fith all-time in league history with Grizzlies manager Phil Warren.
Dustin Roberts was 3-5 with a home run and four RBIs. Roberts' home run was the 24th of the season, and set a new single-season record for the club.
Ryan Sullivan led off the second inning with his ninth home run of the year. The home run was the 125th of the season for the Grizzlies and set a new Frontier League record for home runs in a season. The Grizzlies have now hit 128. Sullivan was 2-4 with two RBIs.
Eric Beck added a pair of hits and three RBIs in the win.
James Hertel (7-1) earned the win for the Grizzlies in releif. Hertel pitched 2.1 innings. He allowed two runs on one hit. He struck out three. Jason Herman started for the Grizzlies. He allowed eight runs, seven earned, in just 4.2 innings.
The Grizzlies and the Wild Things play game two Saturday night at GCS Ballpark. Game time is 7:05 p.m. A win Saturday and a loss by Southern Illinois would clinch the West Division title for the Grizzlies.
