GRIZZLIES HOMER PAST FREEDOM
The Gateway Grizzlies hit five home runs Wednesday night as they defeated the Florence Freedom 11-7 in front of 5,448 at GCS Ballpark.
The Grizzlies (44-20) trailed 1-0 in the second inning when Dustin Roberts hit the first of the long balls. The Grizzlies would get an RBI from Ryan Sullivan later in the inning and lead 2-1.
Florence (33-32) knocked out starter Jason Herman in the fourth, literally. Herman was hit in the elbow with a line drive from Florence first baseman Beau Blacken. They would go on to score four runs in the inning. Herman went just two innings allowing five runs on eight hits. The Freedom led 5-2.
Roberts hit his second home runs of the night, and his league-leading 19th of the year, in the third to cut the lead to 5-3. Roberts was 2-5.
The Grizzlies scored four in the fourth to take a 7-5 lead. They never trailed again. Manny Paula and Charlie Lisk each hit home runs in the inning. The Grizzlies added three more in the fifth on the second home run of the night by Lisk. The three-run blast was his ninth of the year. Lisk was 2-4. Paula was 3-5 and finished a triple short of the cycle.
The Grizzlies bullpen allowed just two runs over the final seven innings of the game. Brandon Kellbach (7-0) earned the win with three innings of work. He allowed a run on one hit. He struck out two. Justin Staatz pitched three scoreless innings. Eric Ridener pitched the ninth, allowing a run on a hit.
The Grizzlies will welcome the Chillicothe Paints to town for a three-game series beginning Thursday night. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
