GRIZZLIES DROP OPENER TO OTTERS

The Gateway Grizzlies dropped the opener of a four-game series to the Evansville Otters 6-5 Thursday night in front of 3,013 at Bosse Field in Evansville, Ind.

The Otters (30-43) got four home runs, including a pair of two-run home runs from secondbaseman Kyle Smith in the win.

The Grizzlies (49-23) trailed 1-0 when they put four on the board in the third inning.  Jonathan Armitage hit a three-run home run, his 10th of the year, to make it 3-1.  The home run extended the Grizzlies consecutive games with a home run streak to 22.  Armitage finished 2-5 with the three RBIs.

Stephen Holdren added an RBI single later in the inning to make it 4-1 Grizzlies.

Smith's first home run of the night made it 4-3 Grizzlies in the fourth inning.  The Otters tied with a solo home run in the fifth.  The Grizzlies answered in the sixth.

Dustin Roberts doubled off the wall to score Mike Breyman who was hit by a pitch.  That put the Grizzlies back on top 5-4.

Smith's second two-run homer of the night in the bottom of the sixth put the Otters on top for good.

Toro Trevin (9-4) suffered the loss for the Grizzlies.  Trevino gave up six runs on six hits over six innings Thursday.  He walked three and struck out five.  He gave up all four home runs to the Otters, and falls to just 2-4 since the All-Star break.  James Hertel tossed two scoreless innings in releif.

The Grizzlies and the Otters will continue the series with a 7:05 game Friday night in Evansville.  Erik Dessau (10-1) will be in search of his league-leading 11th win Friday night as he starts for the Grizzlies.
