GRIZZLIES CLAIM WEST TITLE
Dustin Roberts hit a two-out walk-off solo home run in the ninth inning and the Gateway Grizzlies edged the Washington Wild Things 3-2 Saturday night in front of a season-high crowd of 6,328 at GCS Ballpark. The Southern Illinois Miners fell later in the evening at Rockford, and the Grizzlies laid claim to their second West Division title in franchise history, and their first since 2003.
The Grizzlies (55-25) trailed 2-0 after a pair of first inning runs by Washington (45-35).
Jonathan Armitage picked hit a sacrifice fly to center to drive in Charlie Lisk in the sixth to cut the lead to 2-1.
Roberts hit a solo home run to center in the seventh to tie the game at 2. It stayed that way until Roberts' ninth inning shot ended it. Roberts was 2-4 with the pair of home runs. He now has a league-leading 26 home runs for the season.
Eric Ridener (2-1) earned the win for the Grizzlies. Ridener pitched the ninth, striking out one.
The Grizzlies and Wild Things conclude the series with a 3:05 game Sunday afternoon at GCS Ballpark.
