Kansas City, Kansas—Willie Glen struck out nine batters over five innings to establish a new independent Northern League single-season strikeout record as the Gary SouthShore RailCats defeated the Kansas City T-Bones 4-2 on Thursday night before a crowd of 5,317 at Community America Ballpark. The win moved the RailCats into sole possession of first place in the Northern League's South Division with three games to play.

Glen entered the game with 153 strikeouts on the season, matching the independent Northern League (1993-present) record set by Winnipeg's Bobby Madritsch in 2002. He struck out Neb Brown with one out in the second inning to break the record.

The T-Bones must win two of the three remaining games in the series to qualify for the 2007 playoffs. The RailCats won the first half in the South Division, guaranteeing them a post-season berth.

Gary took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, getting back-to-back two-out singles from Dave Detienne and Steve Haake and a walk to Jose Yepez to load the bases. Jermaine Allensworth walked to force in Detienne to make it 1-0.

Nate Price led off the Gary second with a long home run to right field, his sixth of the season to make it 2-0.

In the third, Haake singled with one out and went to third on Yepez's hard double down the left field line. Haake scored on Allensworth's ground out and Yepez scored on a two-out single to left by Tanner Townsend to make it 4-0.

Kansas City scored its only runs of the night in the fourth inning against Glen. Al Benjamin doubled with one out and Calvin Pickering followed with an opposite field home run to left, his 16^th of the season, to make it 4-2.

But the T-Bones could not score again. Glen left after five innings in his final regular season tune-up before starting game one of the South Division playoffs on Tuesday. He allowed four hits and two runs with two walks and nine strikeouts to improve his record to 12-1. Matt Brinkmann followed Glen to the mound and tossed two perfect innings. David Byard worked a scoreless eighth inning and Tony Cogan pitched the ninth, allowing only a two-out single, to record his league-leading 24^th save.

The RailCats finished with 10 hits including two each by Haake and Price.

As the RailCats game ended, Glen still had a chance to become the first Northern League pitcher since 1953 to lead the league in wins, strikeouts, and earned run average. He will easily win the strikeout title and moved into a tie for the league lead in wins, pending the completion of Fargo-Moorhead's game at Calgary where RedHawks pitcher Dane Renkert was trying for his 13^th win. Glen's ERA of 3.04 trails teammate Josh Habel, who is at 2.94 with one start ahead of him.

The RailCats meet the T-Bones in the third game of the five game series on Friday at 7:05 p.m. Jason Shelley (7-4, 5.08) will start for Gary against Kansas City's Kenny Durost (6-5, 6.46).

Notes: The RailCats have won 10 of the last 11 games and they are 17-5 over the last 22 games…Since August 15^th, Glen and Habel have combined to make seven starts and have allowed a combined total of three runs in 47.1 innings, all as a result of home runs.
