GARCIA, GOMES DEFEAT PATRIOTS 5-4
NEWARK, NJ – August 5, 2007 – Jose Garcia (2-0) didn’t allow a base runner in a span of six innings retiring 18 straight while yielding four runs, two earned, on six hits and striking out six in 7.2 innings pitched, and left-fielder Joey Gomes went 3-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI to defeat the Somerset Patriots 6-4 Sunday afternoon at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. With the win, the Bears have improved their second half record to 12-10 and overall record to 48-37.
With the Bears trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Gomes hit a two-run single and catcher John Pachot hit a sacrifice-fly giving the Bears a 3-1 lead. Second baseman Javier Colina hit an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning, and Gomes capped the Bears scoring with a solo home run, his eighth of the season, putting Newark ahead 5-1.
Somerset cut the lead to 5-4 in the top of the eighth when catcher Jason Belcher hit a solo home run, his third of the season, left-fielder Jason Romano hit an RBI double, and center-fielder Mike Lockwood hit an RBI single. Romano ended the game 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI.
In addition to Gomes, shortstop Victor Gutierrez went 2-for-4 with a run scored, and first baseman Victor Rodriguez went 1-for-4 with a single in the fourth inning, extending his hitting streak to a team high 18 games.
Keith Ramsey (5-5) took the loss surrendering five runs, two earned, on seven hits in six innings and Edwin Almonte picked up his sixth save of the season tossing 1.1 innings striking out three and allowing two hits.
The Bears and Patriots will begin another three-game series Tuesday evening at Commerce Bank Ballpark with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM. Harold Eckert (0-0) will make his third start for the Bears.
