Evansville, IN - For the first time in 11 tries, the Evansville Otters
defeated the Gateway Grizzlies by a final of 6-5. The Otters were led by
Kyle Smith, who launched a pair of two out two-run homeruns over the left
field wall. Evansville got on the board first when JJ Owen homered for
the first time in his professional career, making the score 1-0 after the
2nd. Gateway answered with four runs in the top half of the 3rd, taking a
4-1 lead. The Otters scored two in the 4th on the first of Smith's
homers, another in the 5th on a solo shot by Daniel Burton, and two more
in the 6th on the second long ball by Smith. Evansville used six pitchers
in the winning effort, with Kyle O'Brien picking up his second victory of
the year in relief, while Mike Bille recorded his 14th save of the season,
working 1 2/3 innings, getting two back to back strikeouts to end the
Grizzly threat in the 8th and preserve the win. The Otters will take on
the Grizzles for the second game of the four game series tomorrow at Bosse
Field with game time at 7:05.
