NEWARK, NJ – August 29, 2007 – Right-handed starter Harold Eckert (4-0) struck out a Newark Bears season high 12 batters en route to an 8-2 victory over the Camden Riversharks on Wednesday night at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. Eckert went seven innings, allowing two runs on just two hits and two walks.
The Bears jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by second baseman Javier Colina and a two-run single by third baseman Corey Smith. The Bears added two more in the second when shortstop Ramon Castro lined a run-scoring single and catcher Jason Torres scored on a double play.
Camden got their only runs of the game in the top of the third on a two-run home run by third baseman Craig Paquette. Paquette went 1-for-2 on the night with the home run, two RBI, and a run scored.
The Bears added four more runs on three long-balls. Castro hit an opposite field shot in the fourth, first baseman Victor Rodriguez drilled a two-run blast to left centerfield, and right fielder Jose Herrera added a solo home run in the eighth.
For the Bears, Rodriguez and Castro both finished the night 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBI, and two runs scored.
Bears’ reliever Jason DiAngelo finished the game with two perfect innings, striking out three.
The Bears and Riversharks will play game two of the three game series on Thursday afternoon with first pitched scheduled for noon. The Bears’ Brendon Davis (0-3) will face Camden’s Nate Buttenfield (1-0).
