NEWARK, NJ – August 23, 2007 – Right-handed starter Harold Eckert (3-0) struck out 10 as he scattered four hits and allowed no runs to lead the Newark Bears to a 2-1 victory over the York Revolution on Thursday evening at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.  The win snapped the Bears four game losing streak and improved their second-half record to 20-19.

The Bears jumped on the board in the bottom of the second on designated hitter Joey Gomes’ ninth home run of the season.  The lead was extended in the fourth on an RBI double to right-center by third baseman Corey Smith that plated centerfielder Keith Reed.  Reed finished the night 2-for-4 with the run scored.

The Revolution cut the lead to 2-1 in the top half of the eighth.  Left-fielder Kaz Tanaka led off with a walk and advanced to third on a single by third baseman Keoni De Renne.  Tanaka scored when shortstop Rayner Bautista grounded into a double play.  Bautista pushed his hitting streak to 21 games, one shy of the team record, with a single in the first inning.

York starter Chris Steinborn (7-12) surrendered two runs on six hits and two walks with two strikeouts in eight innings of work.

Bears’ reliever Edwin Almonte pitched the final two innings for his eighth save of the season.  He allowed one earned run on two hits and a walk, striking out two.

The Bears and Revolution will play game two of the three game series on Friday night with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM.  Bears’ right-hander Delvis Pacheco (6-2) will square off against York’s Bryan Edwards (4-3).
