Kansas City, Kansas—David Detienne drilled a grand slam home run to highlight a six-run third inning as the Gary SouthShore RailCats defeated the Kansas City T-Bones 9-7 before a crowd of 5,616 at Community America Ballpark on Tuesday.

Kansas City jumped out to a 5-0 lead against eventual winning pitcher Travis Kerber, scoring two runs in the first and three more in the second. Calvin Pickering delivered a two-out, two-run double in the first to get the T-Bones on the scoreboard, and Rob Watson added an RBI double in the second to make it 3-0. A wild pitch brought in another run before Mario Delgado delivered a run-scoring single to make it 5-0.

The RailCats matched a team season-high with six base hits in the third inning when they scored six runs. Eric McNamee led off the inning with a base hit and went to third on Jay Pecci's single. With one out, Steve Haake singled to drive in McNamee and make it 5-1. Eric Blakeley followed with a double off the left field wall to bring in Pecci and move Haake to third. Jermaine Allensworth walked to load the bases. Before Detienne stepped to the plate, there was a lengthy delay as home plate umpire Hank Himmanen was overcome by the high-90's temperatures and had to leave the game. When play resumed, Detienne lined the first pitch from Chris Krawczyk (4-4) over the left field fence for the second grand slam home run of the season for the RailCats.

Kansas City tied the game on Watson's second RBI double of the night in the fourth before Gary regained the lead in the fifth. Haake led off the RailCats fifth with a double to right and went to third on Blakeley's long fly out to right. Allensworth followed with a sacrifice fly to left to give Gary a 7-6 lead.

Allensworth manufactured a run in the eighth when he singled to right, stole second, stole third, and scored on a wild pitch to make it 8-6. The RailCats added another run in the top of the ninth when Brett Wallace singled and eventually scored on Tanner Townsend's two-out single to give the RailCats a 9-6 lead.

Kansas City scored once in the bottom of the ninth on Watson's third double of the night followed by an RBI single by Mario Delgado, but RailCats closer Tony Cogan got Al Benjamin to ground to short to end the game as Cogan picked up his 16^th save.

Kerber overcame a rough start to get the win and improve to 6-5. He allowed 10 hits and six runs (four earned) in five innings with one walk and three strikeouts. Krawczyk allowed 10 hits and seven runs in five innings to take the loss.

The Gary bullpen, which had struggled mightily the last two games, tossed four strong innings. Steve Edsall worked and scoreless sixth and combined with Jim Crowell to work a scoreless seventh before Crowell worked the eighth without allowing a run.

Watson, Delgado, and Pickering all finished with three hits for Kansas City.

The RailCats meet the T-Bones again Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. Willie Glen (9-1, 3.55) will start for Gary against Kansas City's Kenny Durost (5-4, 6.47).

Notes: The win was the first for the RailCats this season at Community America Ballpark. They were swept in a three game series here in June…RailCats catcher Jose Yepez did not play after being hit on the elbow by a pitch Sunday, but he might play on Wednesday…Pecci was scratched from his shortstop position and served as the designated hitter due to a sore wrist after also being hit by a pitch Sunday.
