'FISH WEATHER STORM
The Bridgeport Bluefish were able to avoid being swept in the double-header against the Lancaster Barnstormers, taking the second game 8-3. Bluefish starting pitcher Nick Bierbrodt picked up his first win of the season in the victory.
The game started off slow as each team was fatigued from the long first game, scoreless through the first two innings of play. Lancaster opened up the scoring in the top of the third with an RBI off the bat of Mike Woods. Bridgeport quickly answered in the bottom of the inning with Johnny Hernandez crossing the plate after Jay Caligiuri reached on an error by Steve Van Note.
Lancaster stormed back with two runs in the top of the fourth delivered from the bat of Jutt Hileman but couldn't hold onto the lead. After singles by Steve Hine and Hernandez in the bottom of the fifth, Caligiuri cleared the bases after destroying a ball into the net above the left field wall, putting the 'Fish up 4-3.
After allowing a one out double in the top of the fifth inning, Eddy Ramos took over for Bierbrodt and struck out the first batter he faced. Then designated hitter Marcos Sanchez took over catching duties and hit a double to lead off the inning, Eddy Ramos was forced into the batting line-up in the seven hole and recorded a single in his first at-bat moving Sanchez to third. Lou Lucca then hit a slow roller down the third base line to load the bases followed by an RBI single by Hine. Hernandez then reached on a fielders' choice before Bobby Malek knocked in two runs on a bloop single. The offensive onslaught continued with a line drive single to left by Nick Ortiz scoring Hernandez from third, ending the scoring of the inning and game leaving the 'Fish ahead by a score of 8-3.
Bluefish starting pitcher Nick Bierbrodt (1-2) went 5.1 innings allowing 3 runs while striking out 5. Lancaster starting pitcher Chris Brock (0-1) absorbed the loss in 5 innings of work.
The Bluefish continue their home stand tomorrow at 7:05 P.M. against the Lancaster Barnstormers. Friday is Fun-For-All-Day at the ballpark with a special appearance by the ZOOPERSTARS and a Frisbee giveaway.
