HOORELBEKE HOMERS LEAD WAY TO VICTORY
The Bridgeport Bluefish faced off against the rival Long Island Ducks tonight in a game that left the Ducks wanting as the ‘Fish defeated them 7-4. Jesse Hoorelbeke was the standout of tonight’s game hitting his 27th and 28th home runs this season and broke the single-season home run record for the Bridgeport Bluefish. Prior to Hoorelbeke, Kinnis Pledger (1998) and Oreste Marrero (2002) held the record with 26 in a season.
The hot bats of the Bluefish continued with a total of 19 runs combined between yesterday and today’s games. Along with Hoorelbeke, Steve Hine and Johnny Hernandez both produced for the ‘Fish. Hine finished three-for-four with a run and Hernandez knocked in 2 RBIs.
Long Island did not go down without a fight however. In the top of the eighth, Duck Carl Everett started off a comeback with a one run double off of relief pitcher Chad Bentz, followed by a two run double by Kevin Haverbusch. Bentz was able to work his way out of the inning before too much damage was done by striking out Rob Cafiero to end the inning.
Bluefish Manny Ulloa pitched a gem, going 6 innings allowing only one run on 5 hits and struck out 3. Ulloa picks up his 2nd win with the Bluefish, his 5th win on the season. Long Island starting pitcher Lance Davis absorbs the loss allowing 7 runs through 4 innings of work. Bluefish Eddy Ramos closed out the game allowing only one hit and recorded his eleventh save.
Newly acquired relief pitcher Chad Bentz made his first appearance this season relieving starting pitcher Ulloa. Bentz held down the game going 2 innings allowing 3 runs and struck out 2. Bentz made a combined 40 appearances for the Montreal Expos and the Florida Marlins in 2004-05 to join left-hander Jim Abbott as the only pitchers to play in the big leagues after being born without one hand.
The Bluefish square off against the Ducks in the rubber match of the series Thursday, August 16th at 7:05 P.M. Thursday is Thirsty Thursday at the ballpark and features the Principal Financial Group Family Fun Fest and Jake the Diamond Dog. There will also be a Koozie Cup giveaway to the first 1,000 fans.
