RUBBER DUCKIES SQUEAK PAST ‘FISH
Bluefish were certainly blue today as the game ended in Harbor Yard. The ‘Long Island Ducks beat the Bridgeport Bluefish 10-7 in the rubber match of the eventful three game series.
The runs came quick and often for the Bluefish starting off in the first inning. Nick Ortiz led off for the ‘Fish with a double, followed by a Quinton McCracken single. Center fielder Bobby Malek grounded out scoring Ortiz in the process. Malek finished one-for-five with three RBIs in the game. Each member of the Bluefish starting line-up recorded at least one hit with Ortiz, McCracken, Willis Otanez, and Luis Figueroa all picking up multi-hit games.
The Ducks started their comeback in the top of the eighth with two runs off the bat of Norm Hutchins. In the top of the ninth the offense kicked it into high gear and scored eight runs to take the lead 10-7. After tying the game up 7-7 during the inning, Jared Price homered to clear the bases with a three run shot.
The home team standout of tonight’s game was starting pitcher Steven Kent. Kent gave up only four hits in six innings of work and struck out 8 in his masterful appearance. Kent was relieved by Mike Porzio who was activated today after being on the inactive list. Porzio allowed two runs in two innings of relief. Franklin Perez came in the top of the ninth with the Bluefish leading 7-2. Perez allowed seven unearned runs before being relieved by Hector Mercado who finished out the game. Perez absorbed his second loss of the season dropping his record to 2-2.
Long Island starting pitcher Randy Leek threw 7 2/3 innings and gave up seven runs, six earned, on 14 hits. Joe Valentine (4-1) took over pitching duties for Long Island in the eighth inning and recorded the win. Long Island’s Danny Graves finished the game and picked up his 28th save of the season.
Tomorrow the Bluefish will begin a three game series against the Road Warriors in Bridgeport at 7:05 P.M. Tomorrow is Fun-For-All Friday at the ballpark. There will be entertainment provided by Jake the Diamond Dog and the Marching Cobras plus a Baseball Keychain giveaway!
