'FISH DROP MARATHON GAME IN TWELFTH

The Bridgeport Bluefish were not able to outlast the Lancaster Barnstormers in a marathon 12 inning, 4 hour 18 minute game.  The ‘Stormers were able to put up five runs in the twelfth inning, including a grand slam by Travis Hake.

The 'Stormers started off the scoring in the top of the second with two run blast by Jeremy Todd, his 22nd home run of the season. Lancaster's starting pitcher Gustavo Martinez held the Bluefish hitless through the first three innings before Nick Ortiz began a two out rally with the first hit of the game for the 'Fish in the fourth. Ortiz advanced to second on a Jesse Hoorelbeke walk with both advancing an extra bag on a wild pitch. The 'Fish then lit up the scoreboard for the first time off of a two run double by Jay Caligiuri.

  

The action was quiet for the span of four innings as the planned seven inning contest entered extra innings tied up at 2. It wasn't until the top of the ninth inning when Perez balked in the leading run giving Lancaster the lead, 3-2.

  

Derrick DePriest entered the game for the 'Stormers to try to close out the game. Johnny Hernandez led off the inning with a hard struck single to left center. Bobby Malek followed with a "swinging bunt" that the catcher attempted a throw to second to catch Hernandez. The throw was off advancing each runner one base, giving the 'Fish second and third with no outs. DePriest was able to fan Quinton McCracken before walking bases loaded. After a Hoorelbeke strike out, Jay Caligiuri approached the plate with two outs. On a passed ball Hernandez came blazing in from third to tie the game up at three.  DePriest then struck out Caligiuri to end the inning and enter the top of the tenth.

 

Eric Ackerman took over pitching duties for the ‘Stormers in the eleventh inning.  Hector Mercado relieved Perez in the top of the tenth, followed by Chad Bentz taking over relief in the twelfth. Bentz allowed the Barnstormers to load the bases then walked in the go ahead run with two outs. The very next batter, Travis Hake, smacked a grand slam over the left field wall taking the lead 8-3 and ended the scoring in the game.
