WARRIORS FIGHT OFF ‘FISH
The rain cooled down the hot bats of the Bridgeport Bluefish as they dropped a pitching duel to the Road Warriors 3-2. Bluefish starting pitcher Justin Sturge (6-9) pitched a gem in the loss for the ‘Fish going eight innings and allowed only three runs on eight hits and struck out nine.
The Road Warriors started off strong in the top of the first with a single by Travis Ezi who made his way home thanks to the bat of third baseman Josh Arteaga’s RBI double. Arteaga later scored on a wild pitch by Justin Sturge.
Right fielder Johnny Hernandez and short stop Nick Ortiz were the only two Bluefish to cross the plate tonight in the loss. Hernandez singled in the fifth inning then stole second before being plated by Ortiz’s double.
The Road Warriors stretched their narrow lead by one more run in the top of the sixth when Ezi singled on a bunt, stole second, advanced to third on an error, then scored off of a SAC fly by Arteaga. In the bottom of the eighth inning it seemed that Bridgeport might make a triumphant comeback but only managed one run on a wild pitch by Warrior Benito Baez. Jay Caligiuri pinch hit in today’s game making his first appearance since July 30th when he was placed on the disabled list.
Darwin Soto (5-5) was the starting pitcher for the Road Warriors and allowed only one run off four hits during his five innings on the hill before being relieved by Chris Eichkorst. Jeff Tam relieved Eichkorst in the seventh for three outs before Baez finished off the game and recorded his third save of the season.
Tomorrow is Roberto Clemente night brought to you by Compare Foods and Amtrak. The ‘Fish will play at 6:05 P.M. and fans will receive Clemente posters. Jake the Diamond Dog will be at Harbor Yard and there will be a Fireworks Extravaganza after the game!
