DUCKS TAKE FIRST SWING AT ‘FISH
The Bridgeport Bluefish dropped the first game to the North Division leading Long Island Ducks by a score of 13-12. An incident in the top of the second inning left the ‘Fish without their starting pitcher and catcher, as well as their field manager Tommy John.
Ducks’ lead-off hitter and former Bluefish Jose Offerman led off the game with a home run on the first pitch. He was later enraged in the second inning when Bridgeport starting pitcher Matt Beech’s pitch hit him in the leg on a zero ball, one strike count. Offerman charged the mound and swung his bat at Beech who was struck in both his hands. Catcher John Nathans, in an attempt to help his teammate, was also struck by the bat in the head and was forced to leave the game.
The bench clearing brawl seemed to motivate the ‘Fish who took the lead in the following inning scoring eight runs on pure adrenaline. Nick Ortiz was a key offensive player for the Bluefish tonight with two homeruns and a bunt for a hit.
Ray Navarrete was a lucky duck here at Harbor Yard on this high scoring occasion. Navarrete finished four-for-six with two RBIs, a double, a home run and two runs scored.
Bridgeport pitcher Garret Berger relieved Beech, allowing six runs on six hits. Hector Mercado made an appearance in tonight’s game giving up three runs on two hits. Franklin Perez and Eddy Ramos also saw some time from the pen.
Donovan Osborne, Mark Watson and Ben Grezlovski were on the mound for Long Island tonight. The trio gave up a combined 13 runs on seventeen hits.
There is no word as of yet on the injuries of Matt Beech or John Nathans.
Tomorrow night, the Ducks and ‘Fish will meet again to duke it out in the second game of the three game series. Tomorrow is $1.00 dog day at the ballpark. There will also be free tattoos and stickers available for all kids.
