NEWARK, NJ – August 27, 2007 – Shortstop Ramon Castro, right-fielder Jose Herrera, and second baseman Javier Colina went a combined 10-for-14 with a home run, four doubles, six runs scored, and eight RBI to lead the Newark Bears to a 12-6 victory over the Road Warriors on Monday night at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
The Bears exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to go up 8-1. Third baseman Vic Gutierrez lined an RBI single to right-centerfield and first baseman Pat Peavey followed with a two-run single to left-center. After a walk loaded the bases, Castro ripped a two RBI single up the middle. Herrera added a run-scoring single and Colina capped the scoring with a double that scored two. Herrera was 4-for-5 with two doubles, three runs scored, and an RBI.
The Bears added three more in the sixth highlighted by a Castro two-run home run to deep left field. Castro went 2-for-4 with the home run, four RBI and two runs scored.
Road Warriors’ shortstop Gabe Suarez drilled a three-run homer in the top of the eighth to close the deficit to five. He went 2-for-4 with the home run and three RBI. Colina added a run for the Bears in the in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI double. He finished the night 4-for-5 with two doubles, three RBI, and a run scored.
The Road Warriors, the Atlantic League’s traveling team, will serve as the home team in Tuesday evening’s game at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. It will be the first time in the 606 games they have played from 2002 to 2004 and 2006 to the present that they will be the home side. Gates will open at 4:05 PM for the 5:05 PM contest that will see Bears’ left-hander Jeriome Robertson (3-3) face Road Warriors’ righty Kieran Mattison (1-1).
